Love the Detective Dee books, so was really excited to see that they'd made a movie and it made enough money to get a sequel/prequel.
Then I watched one.
Now, it is a fun time waster, but aside from the title, there is so little that actually comes from the books and that, plus the dodgy CGI was really distracting and took me awhile to switch gears and get into it.
It's dumb, but fun.
If you tend to think "I like mysteries, but there just isn't enough kung-fu fights or monsters in Agatha Christie." then this movie might be for you.
Good cast, decent historical atmosphere, a wildly uneven sense of humor and the ability to present stuff that should make no sense with a completely straight face.
Still annoyed they don't follow the books, but looking forward to checking out the other one.
